Computer Science holds annual awards banquet

image of Curtis Hite, Joseph Monroe, and Daniel Ragsdale The Department of Computer Science held its annual Spring Banquet and Awards Ceremony on April 19, 2007 at the Pebble Creek Country Club in College Station. Dr. Joseph Monroe PhD '72, Mr. Curtis A. Hite MS '94, and Colonel Daniel J. Ragsdale PhD '01 received the department's Distinguished Former Student Awards, which consisted of commemorative plaques and $1000 scholarships in their honor. The 2006-2007 Monroe Scholarship recipient is Brandon Paulson, a doctoral student in computer science; the Hite Scholarship recipient is Chris Udompanyanan, also a doctoral student in computer science; and the Ragsdale Scholarship recipient is David Moyer who will be graduating in 2007 with a bachelors in computer engineering.

Dr. Monroe, Dean of the College of Engineering at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, is well-known for his successful development and implementation of accredited computer science programs worldwide. Mr. Hite, former CEO of Valtech Technologies, Inc., is recognized for his innovative ideas within the software engineering community and for the education of thousands of professionals in these practices. Colonel Ragsdale, Vice Dean for Education at the U.S. Military Academy, is celebrated for his dedication and significant contributions to Information Assurance research and education. Following the former student award presentations, the computer science student organizations presented student, faculty and staff awards for excellence in leadership, teaching, research and service. Mr. Bryan Boyd received the Undergraduate Research Award and Mr. Xinyu Tang, the Graduate Research Award; Mr. David Moyer was presented with the Undergraduate Leadership Award and Mr. Srikanth Sastry, the Graduate Leadership Award. The Texas A&M Computing Society (TACS) and Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE) honored Mr. Damian Dechev with the TA Teaching Award. The Mentoring Award was presented to Ms. M. F. (Meg) Davis by Aggie Women in Computer Science.

Dr. Teresa Leyk received the Undergraduate Faculty Teaching Award from TACS and UPE. The Computer Science Graduate Student Association selected Dr. Ricardo Gutierrez-Osuna for the Graduate Faculty Teaching Award; Dr. D. M. (Hank) Walker for the Faculty Service Award; and Mr. Jeremy Tarpley for the Staff Award.

The Department of Computer Science Annual Spring Banquet and Awards Ceremony is funded by the department's Industrial Affiliates Program and hosted by Aggie Women in Computer Science, the Computer Science Graduate Student Association, Texas A&M Computing Society, and Upsilon Pi Epsilon.
