Professor Emeritus Richard A. Volz, former Texas A&M Department of Computer Science department head and president of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society during 2006-2007, did exceptional research on robotics and control and was an excellent mentor to students and other researchers in robotics. In honor of his efforts, the Dick Volz Best US PhD Thesis in Robotics and Automation was established. This award recognizes outstanding researchers in the field of robotics and automation who have obtained their Ph.D. degree at any US institution in any topic within robotics and automation.
In August 2012 the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society selected Pieter Abbeel, an assistant professor at UC Berkeley and Stanford graduate, as the recipient of this award. See Abbeel wins "Volz Best US PhD Thesis" at http://www.ieee-ras.org/news/abbeel-wins-volz-best-us-phd-thesis.html.
