UWC HOSTS 2ND GRAMMAR WORKSHOP
The University Writing Center is hosting a second grammar workshop to accommodate demand for its faculty workshop on teaching and grading grammar. This version, titled What We Have In Comma: Grammar Redux, will focus on a review of key grammar rules and a discussion of how those rules evolve. The workshop also will provide instruction on resources writers can use to answer their own grammar and punctuation questions. 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION
The George Bush Presidential Library and Texas A&M University hosts the College Station Noon Lions Club's annual 4th of July Celebration, I Love America. The concession stands will open at 5:00 p.m. The live entertainment and games for the children will all begin at 5:30 p.m. The evening will culminate with a spectacular fireworks display and concert by the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra. People are encouraged to come early and bring their lawn chairs, picnic baskets and blankets. Admission to the museum on the 4th of July is free for everyone all day.
Faculty and staff holiday.
Sterling C. Evans Library and Annex will be open 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with usual services.

A Seminar on NSF's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program for PIs will be presented by Lucy Deckard, Office of Proposal Development (OPD), and Bob Webb, associate dean for undergraduate research. It will include a discussion of NSF REU program requirements and guidelines; characteristics of successful REU proposals; and infrastructure available through the Office of Undergraduate Research to support REU sites and supplements. TEXAS A&M FACULTY/STAFF APPRECIATION DAY
Faculty and staff are invited to Texas A&M University Appreciation Day in Historic Downtown Bryan. Express buses will be running continuously (15 minute intervals) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to and from campus (closest stop to HRBB: Ross and Spence). To kick off this year's event, Bryan Mayor Ernie Wentrcek will host a welcome coffee at the Palace Theater at 10 a.m., and walking tours will leave the Palace Theater at half-past every hour. Economic development professionals, historians and design professionals will be conducting these tours of lofts, historic buildings, public art and meeting venues. Catering, decorating, entertainment and event ideas will be on display. Merchants will be offering 12 percent discounts to all Texas A&M faculty and staff, and a list of participating merchants can be picked up at the Palace Theater. NATIONAL ENGINEERS' WEEK
Texas A&M's Student Engineers' Council (SEC) will celebrate National Engineers' Week through Saturday, Feb. 25, with fun and games. The fun and games start today with the Monday Kickoff. CS FACULTY SWEEP CoE FALL AWARDS
The following computer science faculty were honored at the Look College of Engineering Fall Faculty Meeting held on October 12:
  • Riccardo Bettati was presented with the Tenneco Meritorious Teaching Award distinguishing him as a teacher excelling in scholarly research; his research interest is in distributed real-time systems.
  • Jianer Chen received an E.D. Brockett Professorship Award recognizing him for his continued display of excellence in both teaching and research. Dr. Chen's current research projects include computational complexity and algorithms, computer graphics, and networking
  • Dmitri Loguinov won a TEES Select Young Faculty Award identifying him as a top, worldwide researcher in the area of networking.
  • Lawrence Rauchwerger was presented with a TEES Fellow Award for his leadership of a collaborative team working on SMART Applications for long-running computer programs used to simulate such things as airplanes and weapons.

Texas A&M faculty, staff and students and the College Station/Bryan community may bring donated items to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina to the MSC--outside G.
