ANDRUID KERNE MODERATES SIGGRAPH PANEL

On Tuesday (7/23) from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Ballroom C3 of San Antonio Convention Center Ballroom, Andruid Kerne, assistant professor of computer science at Texas A&M, will moderate the SIGGRAPH panel, Extending Interface Practice: An Ecosystem Approach. Other participants include Michael Matteas (CMU), Wolfgang Strauss (Fraunhofer Institute Media Communication), Thecla Schiphorst (Simon Fraser University), and Will Wright (Maxis Software).

Interface ecology is an emerging meta-disciplinary approach in which creation of rich interactive experiences spans many disciplines, including computer graphics, mathematics, gaming, visual art, performance, and cultural theory. Interfaces extend beyond interactive artifacts, activities, and social spaces, forming intricate ecosystems. Interfaces are the catalytic border zones where systems of representation meet, mix, and recombine. Through this recombination, interface ecosystems generate fundamental innovations of form, experience, knowledge, and technology. This panel brings together a diverse range of practitioners who work from concept to experience to interconnect multiple systems within the whole.

GRANT WRITING SEMINAR TO BE HELD AUGUST 21-22

Dr. Richard E. Ewing, Vice President for Research, is sponsoring grant writers' seminars and workshops to assist faculty by providing them with grant-writing skills that are necessary to maximize their abilities to secure funding for their research ideas. These concurrent workshops will take place August 21 (8:30-4:30) and August 22 (8:30-12:00) , and will accommodate individuals from across the University. One session is geared for faculty members who usually write needs-based applications (liberal arts, social and behavioral sciences, physical sciences and engineering), and the other session would be for those who write hypothesis-driven proposals (medical and biological sciences, social and behavioral sciences and some in physical sciences and engineering). The cost of the seminar is paid for by the VP's office. However, participants are expected to purchase the $50.00 grant-writing workbook that is the text for the seminar. Furthermore, a small number of the participants will have the opportunity to participate in a much more intensive workshop over the course of the year.

Deadline for registration is Monday, August 12.
Participants must register to receive seminar materials.

LOOK COLLEGE PREPARING STUDENTS FOR GLOBAL CAREERS IN ENGINEERING

Recognizing the value of multilingualism and exposure to foreign cultures, Texas A&M University's Dwight Look College of Engineering through the Engineering Academic Programs Office in conjunction with the Department of Modern Languages has created a program that allows all engineering students to better prepare for global careers in engineering. For the second year, the German Certificate Program for engineering students has provided students the skills companies look for in new graduates. The 15-hour program consists of courses in German culture, language and an international experience. Students may opt to participate in a foreign exchange, study abroad, intern with a multinational company or volunteer abroad. Enrollment is open to all students, and financial assistance is available.

Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. FATHER'S DAY
On June 19, 1910, the first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington. The rose was selected as the official Father's Day flower, and some suggest that people wear a white rose to honor a father who is deceased, and a red one for a father who is living. In 1972, Richard Nixon signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day.
